CES students reach food drive goal

Posted Date: 03/03/2021

2,078 cans, boxes and other non-perishable food items donated through the month-long food drive sponsored by Communities in Schools at Chanute Elementary School.

Site Coordinator Angie VanLeeuwen organized the annual CIS of Mid-America Food Drive to fill up the school’s food pantry along with the local food pantries in Chanute.

Each classroom was given a box to place donations inside. Every week, the fifth grade members of the Principal’s Leadership Team collected the piles of ramen, cereal and canned goods after school and counted them all in the site coordinator’s office.

VanLeeuwen encouraged the students by promising a special surprise if they collected more than 1,000 items.leadership team helps with CIS food drive

Following the first week of the food drive, the students collected 440 items for the food pantry. The second week secured the prize, with 731 food items collected from the boxes outside each classroom door.

Though the drive was interrupted by an unexpected snow storm, the students and staff doubled the goal in the final weeks of the food drive, collecting a total of 2,078 items for the food pantries.

“Thank you for all your food drive donations and thank you Leadership team for ALL of your hard work helping collect every week,” VanLeeuwen said.
